The Project:
April 2016
Creative Arts for.CE CIC have been working with a group of students from Ripon Grammar School on a project that has resulted in 2 large artworks, both made up of 3 panels, installed around Ripon. Under the mentorship of Robyn Harrison, from Creative Arts for:CE, the students devised and planned the project, including taking a significant role in raising the funds for the project.
The installation of the work has been timed to coincide with Ripon Cathedral Revealed Festival. The largest set of panels, standing at nearly 2.5 metres, will initially be positioned outside the Cathedral entrance. These panels portray images of Ripon and individuals synonymous with the City such as the Hornblower. The other set of panels will be installed in the Arcade. These pieces reflect Ripon’s historical market place, rambling architecture and green spaces set within one of Yorkshires finest rural locations.
The Yorkshire based artist, Alan Pergusey, has been working with Sixth form Art students from Ripon Grammar School. The students have collected ideas from the general public on what Ripon means to them. Alan Pergusey’s experience working on public and community art has proved invaluable in guiding the students to create designs that truly reflect Ripon in a vibrant and contemporary style. The 2 beautiful sets of panels will be used to enhance several areas and alleyways across Ripon over the next few months.
The project has been funded by various individuals and organisations. County Councillors Bernard Bateman and Peter Horton, have supported the project through North Yorkshire County Councillors Locality Budgets. Donations have also been received from Ripon Rowels Rotary Club and the Stern family. A generous contribution from Valeria Sykes toward the project was also gratefully received after she met with the students to discuss the project. The project has also been supported by the Cathedral and the Harrogate based, West Court Group in hosting the work.
Saturday 16th saw the students and artist working on one of the sets of panels on Ripon’s market square. The day gave the public an opportunity to paint some of the elements of the final pieces. It was also an opportunity for the community to talk to the students about the work that they have been doing with Creative Arts for:CE.
It was cold, grey day but plenty of people came by the stall to express their support for public art and they also managed to warm up their cold hands long enough to do some painting. The stall was also visited by Mayor Pauline McHardy and, Mayor-in-waiting, Adrian Morgan who popped along to have a chat with the students and artist whilst adding their own touches of colour to the panel.
